The magic of "Planned Happenstance"

Career development theories and concepts aren't just for career experts; they can help all of us find our way in the professional world. Among the many perspectives out there, a personal favourite of mine is called "Planned Happenstance."

Planned Happenstance shifts the focus away from having a rigid plan for a specific career end goal and, instead, emphasises engaging in activities driven by your personal interests. It encourages us to find joy in our work by doing things we truly love. It's about staying flexible and open to new, unexpected experiences.

What I love about this approach is the freedom it offers when it comes to career goals. Especially for those of us who are considered multi-passionate and can't neatly fit our interests into a single box or for those who are not certain of an exact career path.

Even those who have been in the same line of work for several years can apply Planned Happenstance to refresh their careers by seeking out new experiences and opportunities within their existing field or by exploring related industries.

This can be done by making connections and conversations with others at networking events or taking workshops, courses or volunteer work driven by your curiosity and interests. You never know where these simple actions may take you. It may lead to an opportunity you had never previously considered or you might connect with people that lead you into an industry you’d like to be a part of. It’s all about keeping an open mind.

So, if you've ever felt the pressure to have it all figured out, this approach to career development could help kickstart a new and unexpected path in your career journey. It's all about exploring your interests, taking opportunities as they come and growing along the way.
