Discovering Career Change Clarity

Embarking on a career change journey can often be a daunting and challenging undertaking, and I can certainly empathise with this, having undergone my own career transition. It is something that many people aspire to, but often talk themselves out of, because of overthinking, doubts and fear of the unknown. However, the reassuring news is that there are concrete steps you can take to ease the process and make your career change journey feel more secure and less risky.

One particular aspect of the career change process that can trigger doubt and uncertainty is the choice of the new field. It's perfectly normal to wonder whether this new path is the right one for you. To alleviate this concern, thorough research about your prospective career is vital. The more knowledge you gather, the clearer your understanding becomes about the suitability of the new role.

Begin by engaging in conversations with professionals already working in the industry you aspire to join. Inquire about various aspects such as workload, salary and daily responsibilities. Their insights can offer valuable guidance and points to consider.

Another effective strategy is to "test drive" your new career. Consider volunteering or shadowing someone for a day in your desired role. This firsthand experience provides a taste of what working in that position might entail. If it resonates with you, it's a positive indicator that you're moving in the right direction. If not, that's okay too. It's far better to discover it's not the right fit before resigning from your current position or investing time and money in a new course or formal qualification.

Keeping yourself well-informed about the job market is a crucial aspect of ensuring a successful career change. This knowledge empowers you to spot opportunities and develop realistic expectations regarding salary, job security and long-term viability. Informed decision-making is paramount to aligning your career with your aspirations.

Additionally, having a backup plan or "Plan B" in case your career change doesn't unfold as expected is a practical action to take. The knowledge that an alternative strategy is in place can alleviate fears associated with leaping into the unknown.

While a career change is a journey you could undertake by yourself, seeking support is invaluable. Trusted friends, family, mentors and career practitioners, can provide essential support, making your career change journey feel more secure and diminishing the doubts and uncertainties that may arise along the way.
